When I went out sailing last week on the Catalina 25, I noticed there was some extra “play” in the tiller. It just didn’t feel right. It looked and felt like the bolt holes had been widened out with use and time. I removed the tiller and discovered it was a little more than just holes that were too wide.
The aft end of the tiller had actually began to split in the middle. Unfortunately, this is a common occurrence and shouldn’t be a big deal. I haven’t had to deal with this yet, because the tiller on my old Hunter was is flawless condition…..because there was always a cover on in when not in use. When I finish this repair, I’ll be making a cover for this one.
I can either repair it [whilst also increasing my knowledge of sailboat maintenance and repairs] or simply buy a new one [and learn nothing]. I’ll likely opt for the former, even though you’ll hear me say otherwise in the video below. ๐
I’ll update with a part 2 post when I finish the repairs. In the meantime, no sailing for a few days. ๐
Has anyone repaired their broken tiller? How’d it go?
