Ok, I know…funny post title…lol. I figured that’s gonna be my new nickname when I’m finished scrubbing the hull on the interior of my boat! When I started the interior demolition, it was fairly easy to remove the old carpet that lined the interior walls. But the foam underside of the carpet had been adhered to the walls, so that required much scrubbing and sanding.
I started with 60 grit sandpaper and that was doing a good job, but was kind of slow, so I transitioned to a wire brush scrubber. Whew! That was the trick! I was able to get all the foam padding off and then follow up with the sandpaper to make it a little smoother, in preparation for paint.
Hey Mike, I don’t know if you have any mould, (sorry, I mean ‘mold’), on your boat but I have a sure fire and cheap method of getting rid of it.
Buy a gallon of bleach and a box of Borax which can be found beside the bleach. Mix equal amounts in a gallon of hot water, I used 1/2 a cup of each myself. Wear kitcken gloves and scrub with a brush then let sit for an hour or two then wipe clean with fresh water and let dry for a day. DON’T throw out your bleach/borax solution. The next day, use a rag and wipe wherever you thought the mould/mold was and other places if you want and just let that evaporate dry. My learner boat was a lab culture for mould and never saw another speck in the next four years of ownership. Sure, you have to smell chlorine for a couple of days but that too goes away. It is a cheap but day eating method, but did I say cheap? Less than $10 and you have a sparking boat inside….A
That’s a pretty good idea for mold, Allan, thanks! I’m not sure about actual ‘mold’ on ours, but there was some rotted wood and a wicked mildew smell from it. I’m almost finished removing all the rotted wood and will be replacing with new, so hopefully that will do the trick. I’ll keep your bleach and Borax method in mind, though.
