Category: Stopper knot
How to tie:
- Tie a simple noose or slip-knot and pull it tight.
- Tuck the working end through the loop.
- Pull on the standing part to reduce the loop until it traps and holds the end.
Use this knot when a Figure Eight Knot is too small to block a hole or slot. This is a bulkier alternative.
Hi Mike. Great knot series and a good idea to make it “motion pictures”. With regards to the stopper knot. When I started out sailing I used the figure of eight as a stopper knot but soon recognized that a figure of eight is coming loose occasionally. So… over the last years I started using the double overhand know (sometimes “triple”) as a stopper knot. It won’t come loose, you can open it easily and it is a very quick knot that you can even use to tie to ends together. One other remark on stopper knots: I often see that “beginners” tie the stopper knot very close to the end of a sheet. This doesn’t make sense at all, because it the sheet comes off the winch under load, there is no way that you can pull the sheet back on the knot. Always leave plenty of line towards the end to be able to pull it with both hands. Well, just a remark, which might be useful to remember. 🙂
Thanks for the comment, Kosta. You’re absolutely right about tying any stopper knot with plenty of line left on the end.
Great idea about the Triple Overhand Knot; I’ll do that one as well.
